Laser-welded profiles are usually welded without filler material from two or more material strips to form a special profile. The material strips, made of mild steel or stainless steel, is cut out of sheet metal or plate. The dimensional range of the material thicknesses goes from 3 – 40 mm (1/8” – 2-1/2”). And the bar length is up to 15 m (49ft). In laser welding, the contact surfaces of the steel strips are welded directly together without the material having to be chamfered beforehand. For this reason, weld seams are hardly visible even when the laser beam has to penetrate the material by 10 mm (3/8”) on each side.

Laser-welded profiles are extremely flexible in terms of design and minimum quantities and can even be manufactured as single bars.

Due to the significantly lower distortion during welding, laser-welded profiles can achieve much tighter tolerances on the overall geometry, torsion and straightening accuracy compared to conventionally welded profiles. The profiles can be statically optimized by welding material strips of different thicknesses within the profile geometry. The profiles are sharp-edged regardless of the material thickness used. External welding seams are reworked and are hardly noticeable even when viewed closely.

Hollow-hybrid-profile

1| Laser welding enables the production of hybrid profiles, which parts are made of mild and stainless steel. The more costly material is only used where it is necessary for technical reasons.

2| Hollow sections can be produced with several chambers. These can also be welded according to pressure equipment directives in order to use them, for example, as flow conducts for heating circuits with additional closable function channel for cable routing.

3| It is also possible to produce trapezoidal, triangular, pentagonal or octagonal profiles, offering architects extended degrees of freedom. The weld seams are not visible even with such sophisticated profile geometries.
